We are pleased to report that the CBA Administrative Law Section is having a successful year and continues to be busy with a number of new initiatives. For example, the Section contributes to national policy, comments on proposed legislation, and offers a variety of continuing legal education options to our members. We encourage you to visit our webpage to learn more about these exciting opportunities and to meet our new 2018/19 Executive.

The executive remains committed to our number one priority: you. As a Section, we will continue to focus on delivering value to our members.

Our new CBA Admin Law Insider has been a success and will continue. Throughout the year, the Insider delivers pan-Canadian content to our members on interesting cases and emerging issues in administrative law. We hope that the Insider will serve as a hub for legal developments across Canada and for the exchange of ideas amongst our members. Of course, the Insider is only possible with your contributions. If you would like to submit content for a future edition, contact us. You can also contribute articles on administrative law issues under the Section’s commentary banner Intra Vires. This is a great opportunity for lawyers to give back to the profession and get published.

Our partnership with the Laskin Moot Competition has also proven to be a positive one. Each year, Section members from our local CBA branches participate in practice sessions for student moot teams at law schools across the country. We plan to continue this partnership. As a Section, we are always interested in finding new ways to strengthen our relationship with law students and young lawyers interested in administrative law. If you have additional ideas, do not hesitate to contact us.

On November 16-17 we held our 19th annual CBA Administrative Law and Labour and Employment Law Conference. Each year, more than 150 lawyers, law professors, tribunal members, and judges from across the country attend this diverse and well-respected program. We look forward to seeing you in Ottawa next year. Please save the dates: Nov 8-9, 2019. If you have any suggestions for future topics or speakers, let us know.

GET INVOLVED

  • The Section continues to have several active committees and would welcome expressions of interest from members wanting to get involved. Our committees currently include:
    • Law of Lobbying and Ethics Committee
    • Professional Development Committee
  • Encourage a law student or young lawyer (within three years of their call to the Bar) to submit an essay for our Paul Smith Memorial Award by February 28, 2019
  • Recruit colleagues to join our Section and receive the CBA Admin Law Insider newsletter

As we embark on a new year of Section activities, we must also take an opportunity thank our past Chair, Audrey Boctor, for her leadership and commitment to the CBA. Audrey is a tireless volunteer and a wonderful ambassador for our Section.

We look forward to hearing from you.
