Law Day

The Canadian Bar Association sponsored Canada's first Law Day on April 18, 1983 to mark the anniversary of the proclamation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Subsequent Law Days have been celebrated in April to commemorate the anniversary of the Charter's proclamation.

The theme for Law Day is "Access to Justice." The purpose of Law Day is to promote amongst Canadians an increased awareness of their legal rights and obligations. It is a national event with legal oriented activities being held across the nation.

This year Law Day is celebrated April 17, 2008, and CBA Saskatchewan is focusing on three events as follows:

1.  The ninth annual McKercher Cup Mock Trial Competition for high school students. The mock trial competition recreates the dramatic centre of the justice system by allowing participants to play roles in trial, including prosecutor, defence counsel and witness. Such a "hands-on" learning activity provides students with the opportunity to learn the basic facts about court room procedures, rules of evidence and various legal concepts inherent in a criminal trial including "innocent until proven guilty".  This year's McKercher Cup is scheduled for Saturday, April 12th, at the Court of Queen's Bench Court House in Saskatoon.

The Case, Registration Form and Guides can be found at the following links.  For any further information, please call the CBA Saskatchewan Branch Office at 306-244-3898.

2.  A Law Day Luncheon and Dinner, one in Regina and one in Saskatoon, both featuring keynote speaker Edward L. Greenspan, Q.C., Greenspan Partners, Toronto, Ontario.  His presentation will be entitled, "A Stranger in a Surprisingly Strange Land:  The Differences between an Amercian Trial and a Canadian Trial."

Details for the luncheon and dinner are as follows:

Regina:  Friday, April 18, 2008, Delta Regina Hotel - Noon Luncheon Meeting
Saskatoon:  Friday, April 18, 2008, Delta Bessborough Hotel - Evening Dinner Meeting

Tickets for the luncheon are $35 each or $280 for a table of eight.  Tickets for the dinner are $50 each or $400 for a table of eight.  The Luncheon Invitation and Ticket Order Forms can be found on the following links:

3.  A Law Day Poster Contest in which the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian Bar Association would like to invite Grade 5 classes to participate in this contest.  The Law Day Poster Contest is a great opportunity for Grade 5 students to learn and demonstrate an understanding of the rights of Canadians, including those specified in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.   Details of the contest along with the Registration Form can be found on the following link:
