Overview

Darren Anger Law Professional Corporation is the Standing Agent for the Director of Public Prosecutions and is responsible for federal prosecutions throughout the Region of Niagara. The office is located in St. Catharines, Ontario, adjacent to the Robert S.K. Welch Court House.

We are seeking interested lawyers with experience or an interest in criminal law for an open prosecutor position.

The successful applicant will have a rewarding opportunity to work with local law enforcement agencies prosecuting offences related to the Controlled Drugs and Substances ActCriminal Code, Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, Customs Act and the Income Tax Act. Initial responsibilities will focus on file management, bail court, assignment court, conducting trials on straight forward matters and working with senior counsel on complex prosecutions and legal research. If selected, you will have extensive opportunities to develop oral advocacy and litigation skills through daily court appearances.

The successful applicant will either be from the Niagara Region or be willing to relocate here.

Qualifications

  • Experience in criminal law or an interest in learning.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside normal working hours which may include evenings and weekends based on operational needs
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license

Competencies Sought

  • Knowledge of the roles and practices of Standing Agents in the conduct of criminal litigation for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (reference: PPSC Deskbook and Agent Agreement – Terms and Conditions)
  • Knowledge of criminal law and procedures including knowledge of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and relevant case law
  • Professionalism (such as professional conduct, professional fortitude, service orientation and self assessment)
  • Self-Motivated with the ability to docket time worked on files
  • Sound judgement (such as decision making, critical thinking and adaptability)
  • Ability to engage in multiple tasks simultaneously while handling an assigned caseload
  • Ability to work in a team-based office while demonstrating leadership and initiative, with a priority given to practice and file management
  • Oral and written advocacy skills are essential

Conditions of Employment (Must obtain if the successful applicant)

  • Enhanced reliability security clearance
  • Must pass comprehensive testing based on knowledge and understanding of Canadian Criminal Law and Procedures including scope of work and responsibilities as a Crown Agent with the PPSC
  • Member in good standing in the Law Society of Ontario

Compensation

  • Compensation to be determined based on level experience and other qualifications of the successful applicant.

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • St. Catharines, ON: Reliable transportation to Niagara or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
  • On-site Parking (included with employment)

Work Location: In person with some flexibility to work remotely.
