Overview of the role

The Junior Associate Lawyer is responsible for a wide range of legal work, which includes but is not limited to, monitoring limitation deadlines, attending at questionings, doing legal research, drafting various legal documents, assessing and issuing proposals or settlement offers, attending at JDR and ADR, attending at Court for applications or trial, and meeting with clients. The Junior Associate Lawyer will also assist Senior Associate Lawyers and Partners with legal work as necessary. The primary goal of the Junior Associate Lawyer is to become proficient at all aspects of personal injury litigation, and to take on a full load of personal injury files. The Junior Associate Lawyer is responsible for maintaining a high level of client satisfaction and achieving the best possible result for every client. 

Please note that this position is based in our Britannia Crossing location however periodic assistance in our International Avenue location may also be required.

How you would contribute to our team

  • Provide excellent client care and regular contact, by telephone, email, and in person
  • Maintain responsibility for your own client files
  • Track and manage lawsuit filing and service limitation deadlines
  • Prepare legal documents related to litigation
  • Perform legal research related to client files
  • Perform questionings including reviewing and understanding client files to assist in preparation;
  • Develop complete understanding of the life of a client file and its various phases
  • Understand and remain up to date on Rules of Court, industry related materials and changes
  • Assess client files: research of case law, contacting clients to obtain additional information, summarize medical documentation, and quantify personal injury claims
  • Complete liability investigations as necessary
  • Attend Court for chambers applications or as necessary
  • Perform notary functions
  • Prepare and respond to settlement proposals and offers
  • Prepare for and attend at JDR or ADR
  • Prepare for and attend at trial
  • Resolve personal injury claims
  • Assist Senior Associate Lawyers with any of the above functions as required

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

  • J.D. or LL.B from a recognized Canadian or International institution
  • Active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
  • Reliable access to a vehicle for transportation

Assets:

  • Experience with Proclaim legal software
  • Verbal/written second language skills outside of English
