Statement from CBA President John Stefaniuk, K.C. on the rise of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in Canada

  • November 14, 2023

The CBA continues to condemn the rise of racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in Canada flowing from the situation in Israel and Gaza. We call on all members of the legal community to foster responsible and respectful dialogue.

Lawyers have a special obligation and responsibility – as affirmed by the rules of professional conduct – to respect human rights laws and recognize the dignity and worth of all persons and to treat all persons fairly and without discrimination. The Charter of Rights guarantees everyone the right to free expression. We must remind ourselves of the importance of respecting different viewpoints, and exercising our freedom of speech responsibly.

This is a difficult time for many of us, which is why it is more important than ever to focus on what unites us, and to stand united against all forms of hatred.
