The Canadian Bar Association is deeply troubled by the recent decision of the US Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health and its reversal of what has been a protected right of reproductive choice in the United States.
In Canada, people have legal access to reproductive health services through their provincial and territorial healthcare systems. Abortion was decriminalized in 1988 in R. v. Morgentaler, where the Supreme Court of Canada found that the abortion law violated a woman's right to life, liberty and security of the person, guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Today’s news is a reminder of the importance to continue to fight for equality.
