OTTAWA - The Foundation for Legal Research has awarded the 2016 Walter Owen Book Prize to Pierre-Claude Lafond, professor at Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Law, for his book, Droit de la protection du consommateur : théorie et pratique, published in 2015 by Éditions Yvon Blais.
Short Description:
- The book reviews the groundwork for consumer law in Quebec, Canada and the United States, before more specifically addressing the scope of consumer law in Quebec.
- According to the Chair of the Selection Committee, Julie Latour, this important sphere of the law has been due for such an update.
- “Through its clarity and comprehensiveness, this remarkable work succeeds in reaching a wide audience of law students, lawyers, notaries, judges, as well as the everyday consumer,” says Ms. Latour.
- In addition to the fresh and thorough analysis presented in the book, the Committee noted the legal and social relevance of this work, underlining its ingeniousness and coherence in dealing with the theoretical and practical foundations of consumer law.
- The Walter Owen Book Prize is designed to recognize excellent legal writing and to reward outstanding new Canadian projects that enhance the quality of legal research in this country. The $10,000 prize is funded by the Foundation for Legal Research.
- The prize alternates each year between works written in French and English. This year the prize is presented for a book written in French. Twenty-one books were nominated, and five were short-listed.
- The prize will be officially presented in Ottawa on August 10, 2016 at the President’s Dinner during the Canadian Bar Association Legal Conference in Ottawa, Aug. 11-14, 2016.
