Calgary student Robert Sevalrud wins 2016 CBA Edward K. Rowan-Legg Award

Robert SevalrudOTTAWA - Robert Sevalrud, a Juris Doctor Candidate at the University of Calgary, is the recipient of this year’s Edward K. Rowan-Legg award. The award will be presented on August 11 at the 2016 Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Legal Conference (CLC).

  • The Edward K. Rowan-Legg Award, which carries with it a cash prize of $1,000, complimentary registration to the Canadian Legal Conference and a plaque, is designed to recognize a dedicated contribution to the CBA by a student member, and encourage student member participation in the Canadian Legal Conference.
  • This year’s winner, Robert Sevalrud, has been active in the CBA since 2014. At the University of Calgary he is the Student Section Co-Chair of the CBA, a student representative on the Law Faculty Council and the co-head of the Law Student Ambassador Program, and in addition to his course work and extra-curricular activities he is active in sports.
  • Sevalrud has a degree in civil engineering as well as an MBA in finance and worked as an engineer for several years before deciding to study law. In nominating him for the award, Wayne Barkauskas, president of the Alberta Branch of the CBA emphasized Sevalrud’s maturity and his leadership capacities as well as his active involvement in a variety of activities.
  • “Robert’s prior career experiences as an engineer and his MBA in finance will give great depth to his career as a lawyer, but we believe they also give him interesting perspectives he can bring to bear as a CBA leader,” said Wayne Barkauskas.
  • The Edward K. Rowan-Legg Award was established by Judi Rowan-Legg in honour of her husband, Edward K. Rowan-Legg of Ontario and Nova Scotia. Ted was a dedicated and active member of the CBA, who served as CBA National Treasurer from 1999 until his death in 2001.
