Network your way to connections and referrals

  • July 10, 2019

How do you keep your career and your legal practice on a steady path towards growth? Build networking directly into your busy schedule. Your CBA membership offers year-round opportunities to connect with other members.

Preston Parsons values his membership for the referrals he receives for work. “I often refer work to and receive referrals from other lawyers whom I have strong relationships with through years of attending CBA meetings or leading Sections together,” explains Parsons. “The relationships I have established through the CBA are not only here in Vancouver, but across British Columbia, Canada, the United States and United Kingdom.”

Here are three ways to network through your CBA membership:

  1. Attend a CBA conference or networking event: Section and branch conferences offer engaging speakers, professional development programming and opportunities to connect with colleagues. The CBA also hosts learning and networking events throughout the year both nationally and locally.
  2. Get actively involved in CBA Sections: CBA Sections are specialty groups that focus on substantive areas of the law or represent common interests. They respond to issues in the profession, conduct advocacy work on important legal matters, and host meetings, conferences and events directly relevant to your needs.
  3. Lend your voice to advocacy work: The CBA promotes lawyers’ interests and protects the core values of the legal profession in Canada from legislative encroachment. Our members take an active role in contributing to submissions to government, court interventions and policy resolutions.

Networking and getting actively involved in the CBA has many rewards. “My CBA membership allows me to participate in conversations that I am passionate about,” explains New Brunswick’s Candice Pollack. “Having the chance to form and co-lead the Mental Health Committee of the National Young Lawyers Section gives me renewed energy that our profession is moving in the right direction.”
