The legal history behind our story

150 years ago, a new country officially came into being with the proclamation of the Dominion of Canada. The negotiations that resulted in the union of the British North American colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the Province of Canada (formerly Lower Canada and Upper Canada) were the work of 36 Fathers of Confederation – 20 of whom were lawyers.

As we celebrate Canada’s birthday this weekend, let’s remember the legal milestones that marked the country’s evolution from colony to a mature nation. Today, our laws reflect our values as a modern society and the CBA has been there through the years – promoting the rule of law and working to build a more equitable society.
