National Legislative Development in Vietnam

Canadian lawyers have been assisting the NLD project recently by providing their expertise in support of the piloting of Vietnam’s new law-making process in the development of specific economic legislation. In the coming months lawyers and other Canadian technical specialists will be sharing their knowledge in the areas of private international law, trade law, and fisheries law, among others.

In addition, the project has been working to organize a ministerial-level strategic planning workshop in December, with the participation of former Canadian deputy ministers at both the provincial and federal levels. The aim of the workshop is to bring high-level officials in Vietnam together to discuss the immediate and long-term implications of the institutional changes which will be required when the new law on laws comes into effect.

Goodbye to Jennifer Khor

The CBA said goodbye in October to CBA International Initiatives project director Jennifer Khor, who has left for a policy position with the Law Society of Upper Canada. Here is what CEO John Hoyles had to say about her leaving:

“This is one of those times again where we sadly have to say goodbye to one of our colleagues. Since joining the CBA in 2003, Jennifer Khor was an integral element of CBA International Initiatives’ success.

Bringing a wealth of international development experience to her position, Khor served as Project Director in a succession of projects in South East Asia and East Africa. She emphatically worked with our partners in supporting capacity building and strengthening access to justice initiatives. As a sign of appreciation, the Vietnam Bar Federation, a fledging national bar with whom Khor worked for four years, honoured Khor’s contribution by awarding her the “Medal for Development of the Legal Profession in Vietnam,” one of the highest civilian medals.

Khor worked tirelessly in supporting the CBA International Initiatives program throughout her time at the CBA. The CBA thanks her for her dedication to strengthen the rule of law, access to justice and making this world a better place. After 13 years, Khor has decided to give her career a new trajectory. She joined the Law Society of Upper Canada as Director, Policy. She will be missed by her many colleagues here at the CBA and in the various countries she served in.”
