Volunteer in Profile award launched

The CBA’s Pro Bono Committee has launched a new award to recognize CBA members with more than 10 years in the profession who have contributed to delivering, establishing or coordinating pro bono legal services; education and advocacy to promote a pro bono culture in the profession; and/or to legal research and reform relating to pro-bono legal services.

The committee intends to offer its award four times a year, but it needs members’ help in identifying people to celebrate. Ideally, the award winners will rotate on a regional basis through the branches. Nominations may be made at any time, so if you know of a good candidate for the award, read on for details.

National Sections Council Award of Excellence

The National Sections Council Award of Excellence celebrates and recognizes the outstanding contribution of a National Section in providing service to members and furthering the objectives of the CBA. The deadline for nominations is May 16, 2016. Read on for details.

Rod Holloway wins Legal Aid Leader award

Rod Holloway, currently the Managing Lawyer for Appeals at the Legal Services Society of British Columbia, is the winner of the 2016 Legal Aid Leader award, which recognizes legal aid lawyers who have made a significant contribution to providing access to justice to people in need.

Holloway has played a major role in providing legal aid services in British Columbia for some 40 years. He developed the Legal Services Society (formerly Legal Aid Society) policies, managed its criminal and immigration services and has represented clients at numerous boards and tribunals as well as every level of Provincial and Federal Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Any CBA member can nominate a lawyer in good standing for the award. The deadline for nominations is rolling. The winner will be announced by the Legal Aid Liaison Committee. Read on for details.

CCCA announces 2016 award winners

The CCCA announced its roster of 2016 award winners at its national conference held in Calgary earlier this month. The awards and this year’s winners are:

Professional Contribution Award – CCCA Quebec Chapter, which is “leading the charge on the important discussions around the value of in-house counsel in the sound administration of justice.” Read on for details.

Up and Comer Award – Jonathan Cullen, Vice-President, Legal Affairs & General Counsel, Pfizer Canada Inc.,  has authored a number of publications, including the leading text on Anton Piller orders in the Federal Court; sits on Innovative Medicines Canada’s IP Core Team; and is also heavily involved in his community. Community Builder Award – Paul Jonathan Saguil, Senior Counsel, TD Bank Group, was recognized for his generous donations of time and talent and energy to a number of programs and organizations important to the legal community. Read on for details.

Innovation Award – BMO Financial Group, Legal & Compliance Group, Toronto,  was recognized for introducing the Innovative Team Challenge, which uses a grassroots approach in the form of a competition to generate a culture of innovation and productivity within the Legal & Compliance Group. Read on for details.

R.V.A. Jones Award – This award, the highest national honour awarded by the CCCA, was given this year to Julia Shin Doi, General Counsel and Secretary of Board of Governors, Ryerson University, whose “achievements, leadership, and over 22 years of hard work, both professionally and on a volunteer level, serve as a shining example of what all corporate counsel strive to achieve in their careers.” Read on for details.
