The Canadian Bar Association International Development Committee and its partner IBM Business Consulting Services are the winners of the 2007 CHF Award for Improvement of Social Infrastructure, a Canadian Award recognizing outstanding work in international cooperation and development.
The President of the Canadian International Development Agency, Robert Greenhill and the Honorable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters announced the Award at a special ceremony at the Delta Fredericton in New Brunswick on May 23.
The Award honors the CBA for its Canada-China Legal Aid and Community Legal Services project. The development project was designed to strengthen China’s legal aid and community legal services system and to enhance the capacity of the Chinese Ministry of Justice in this area.
The project involved China’s national legal aid centre and model legal aid clinics in four of China’s poorest provinces. CIDA provided $3.8 million in funding to implement the project which began in November 2002. Legal Aid Ontario worked closely with CBA and IBM on the project.
This is the second award won by the CBA in the past six years recognizing its work in development.
