Class Actions

On January 28th, 2009, the OBA approved the creation of a Class Actions Subcommittee within the Civil Litigation Section.

The newly created OBA Class Actions Subcommittee will allow for the gathering of practitioners (plaintiff- and defence-side alike), members of the judiciary, corporate counsel and academics interested in class actions to liaise in order to analyze important issues in this growing field, market their practices, and provide CLE programs.

The Class Actions subcommittee also intends to play an important role in advocacy in order to improve and coordinate the rules and legislation governing class actions on a number of topics of controversy, such as national class actions.

Recent News:

On February 13, 2010 the CBA announced the launch of a new National Class Action Task Force to be chaired by Sylvie Rodrigure of Ogilvy Renault LLP, the current chair of the OBA Class Action Subcommittee. The Task Force will be comprised of several notable judges and jurists from both the plaintiff and defence bar across the country. The option to join the Class Actions Subcommittee is available to members who join the Civil Litigation Law Section.
