Fields of Study:

Most areas of law and legal theory are available for study (LL.M. and S.J.D.) and the programme of each student is arranged to meet that student’s interests and needs. Collaborative Graduate Programs in Women’s Studies and Bioethics provide structured opportunities to do interdisciplinary work in another field at an advanced level, but interdisciplinary work in all areas is encouraged.

The Masters in Studies in Law (M.S.L.) programme is designed for established scholars, in disciplines related to law, who wish to acquire a knowledge of law in order to add a legal dimension to scholarship in their own discipline.

Admission requirements:

LL.M.: LL.B. (minimum B+ average)
Direct entry S.J.D.: LL.B. (minimum B+ average) plus demonstrated capacity for advanced legal scholarship
S.J.D.: LL.B. (minimum B+ average) & LL.M. (minimum B+ average)
M.S.L.: preferably a doctorate, and must have demonstrated a high level of scholarship in a discipline related to law.

S.J.D., LL.M. & M.S.L. Application Deadlines:

February 1

Program Requirements:

LL.M.(full time):
Time Limit: 12 months, full-time (with an 8 month residency requirement)

Requirement: 24 credit hours of thesis and courses, including one compulsory course

Courses: between 8 and 20 credit hours of coursework

Thesis: between 4 credit hours (50 – 60 pages) and 16 credit hours (120-150 pages)

LL.M. (part time):
Time limit: 2 years, part-time (with an 8 months residency requirement)

Course requirements and thesis as above to be completed by 31 August of Year 2
Direct Entry S.J.D.:
Time Limit: 5 years with 16 month residency requirement, but 3 year full time study in residence is recommended as a reasonable time for completion and funding is guaranteed for 3 years only

Courses: 8 credit hours, including graduate seminar

Thesis: 300-400 pages double spaced
S.J.D.:
Time Limit: 5 years with 8 month residency requirement, but 3 year full time study in residence is recommended as a reasonable time for completion and funding is guaranteed for 3 years only

Courses: mandatory graduate seminar and additional courses negotiated individually

Thesis: 300-400 pages double spaced
M.S.L.:
Time Limit: 8 months

Courses: 28-32 hours

Research: project of an interdisciplinary nature
