Fields of study:

The Graduate Program is concentrated in areas in which the Faculty of Law is strong in staff, library resources, and course offerings: Constitutional and Administrative Law; Criminal Law and Criminal Policy; Family and Children’s Law; Feminist Legal Studies; Health Law; International Legal Studies; Labour Law; Taxation. Thesis work may be done in other fields as well, subject to the availability of supervisory and library resources.

Admission requirements:

A university degree, normally in Law, with high standing.

Deadline for application:

February 1. Preference will be given to early applications. It is especially important to meet the February 1 deadline if you are seeking financial support. Late applications will be considered only if places remain open.

Program requirements:
1. Thesis: The program focuses on research and the writing of a thesis. The thesis should be in the range of 100 to 150 pages in length (25,000 to 40,000 words).

2. Course work: Every student must take the full-year graduate seminar (LAW-800) and at least one other course. Additional coursework is encouraged only if it contributes to the student’s thesis work. At least B standing must be obtained in each course.

3. Residency requirements: Full-time students must be in residence in Kingston for twelve months, normally from September to August. A part-time program is also available, and is designed to encourage completion of the degree requirements within a two-year period.
Time limits:

Full time students normally complete all requirements for the degree in twelve months, but a maximum of five years is allowed.

Financial assistance:

Financial assistance is available for a limited number of students, based largely on academic criteria. Applicants who want to request such assistance should check the appropriate box on the application for admission.
