Message from the Chair

Hello:

You are receiving this message as a CBA National Entertainment, Media, and Communications Law Section member. As the Section Chair, I wanted to tell you a bit about our efforts to renew the Section and, I hope, engage you in Section activities.

First, allow me to introduce the current Section Executive:

Chair: Bram Abramson
Vice-Chair: David Elder
Past Chair: Steven Nemetz

Branch Section Chairs: Jon Festinger (BC); Robert Sokalski (MB); Brian Wynn (ON); Johanne Daniel (QC)

National Area-of-Practice Committee Chairs: Bob Tarantino (Entertainment); Steven Nemetz (Art and Cultural Property). Three AOPC chairs are vacant (Broadcasting; Telecommunications; Media and Freedom of Expression).

The purpose of the National EMC Law Section is to undertake activities and projects that benefit you and advance the practice of entertainment, media, and communications law in Canada. Most of the national activities and projects emerge through the individual area-of-practice Committees.

Call for Committee Members

Through committees, members have the opportunity to keep abreast of developments in specific areas of law, to undertake initiatives that collectively enhance the area of practice and to network and exchange ideas with practitioners in other organizations on matters of common interest. To join a committee, subscribe to the relevant e-mail list, by visiting the CBA Listserv Enrolment webpage (CBA membership number required).

We look forward to your input and participation.

Bram Abramson
2011-2012 Chair

Mandate

Committees

The Entertainment, Media and Communications Law Section concentrates on six areas of law:

  • Advertising - the law affecting advertisers in Canada, including Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission regulation, provisions of the Competition Act, and legislation intended to protect consumer privacy rights;

  • Art and Cultural Property -  monitoring and lending advocacy where required to legal and regulatory developments affecting Art and Cultural Property issues in Canada.

  • Broadcasting - regulatory and other legal issues affecting broadcasters and broadcast distributors, including the mandate and policies of the CRTC and copyright issues;

  • Entertainment - the concerns of the entertainment bar include freedom of expression, regulatory, copyright and privacy issues, as well as the rights and responsibilities of artists and their employers;

  • Media and Freedom of Expression - the legal issues facing electronic and print media in Canada, including libel, slander and defamation issues and freedom of expression concerns;

  • Telecommunications - legal and regulatory developments affecting providers and users of telecommunications in Canada, including content/carriage issues, CRTC mandate and regulatory policies, and electronic commerce.

The Section often works with other National Sections to bring the specific concerns of these areas of the Bar to the attention of policy-makers.
