International Section members...
If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to consider joining one or more of the Section's Committees. The Committees are essentially interest groups and are the best way to get the most out of your Section membership. The Committees activities include teleconferences, brown bag lunches, policy initiatives, listserves communications, newsletters, organizing presentations and postings on the Section’s website. The Committee’s are the premier way for you to network and exchange with leading practitioners who share your interests.
Committee membership is free to all Section members and while your active participation is more than welcome membership involves no time commitment.
There are four Committees as follows in which most of the Section’s day-to-day activity takes place:
You will find details on each Committee’s areas of interest and activities at: http://www.cba.org/CBA/sections_international/main/committees.aspx.
Joining a committee is easy: simply email the chair at the address above and he or she will have you added to the Committee listserve. Or email Jennifer Lalonde (jennifer@cba.org) and she will set you up.
There is no better way to keep abreast of Section activities and network with other international practitioners than signing up with one or more of the Section’s Committees. The Committees truly are a key portal for your international practice.
Sincerely,
Paul Lalonde,
Chair of the International Law Section
Framework needed for cross-border enforcement initiatives
In response to a federal Department of Justice consultation document “Towards a framework for integrated cross-border law enforcement initiatives,” the CBA says that the practice of granting Canadian peace officer status to an officer from the United States should be considered extremely exceptional and used only in the face of compelling evidence. However, the CBA acknowledges that since this practice is already happening on an ad hoc basis, a framework for guiding such initiatives in future could emphasize fundamental principles such as accountability, transparency and adherence to Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Input to the CBA response was provided by the National Criminal Justice, Privacy and Access to Information Law, and International Law Sections.
