CBA/JCEB/IPEBLA Global Pension and Employee Benefits Lawyers Conference
June 22-24, 2014
The Drake Hotel, Chicago USA

SAVE THE DATE and JOIN THE TEAM!

The Canadian Bar Association (Pension and Benefits Law Section), the American Bar Association (Joint Committee on Employee Benefits), together with the International Pension and Employee Benefits Lawyers Association are proud to announce a joint conference, to be held in Chicago USA June 22-24, 2014. Save this date!

This two-day session will deal in–depth with legal issues concerning pensions and benefits in the context of a changing global environment. It will provide educational and networking possibilities for lawyers from all countries, with attendees encouraged to actively participate in discussions and presentations on various topics. Also, Canadian and US lawyers will be able to receive continuing legal education credits.

The Joint Steering Committee, made up of representatives of all three organizations, is seeking volunteers to join the Program Committee, chaired by Kenneth Burns (CBA) and the Social Committee, chaired by Carolyn Trenda (IPEBLA) to help develop content and activities for the conference.

Volunteers for the Program Committee should be willing to help coordinate a broad-based agenda that serves the interests and educational needs of participants from around the world, contact potential speakers to enlist their participation and speak or moderate at the conference themselves. To ensure a balanced agenda, we will aim for the Program Committee to have roughly equal representation from Canada, the United States and other countries.

Volunteers for either Committee should contact:
Leslie Huard
Canadian Bar Association
leslieh@cba.org

Committees will have their inaugural conference calls at dates and times to be determined shortly.

Member Activities and Committees

The National Pensions & Benefits Law Section is seeking participation in its various committees. These committees provide Section members with the opportunity to comment on proposed changes to legislation and regulatory policies, keep abreast of developments in pensions and benefits law and to network with others with similar interests. Committees need the contribution of Section members to deliver relevant services to members and to prepare submissions to legislative and regulatory bodies that reflect the full range of member perspectives.

Mandate

Mandate

This National Section has been developed based on the rationale that pensions and benefits law affects all members of the public across Canada, in all provincial jurisdictions and in the federal jurisdiction, and encompasses a wide range of complex legal issues. As such, a need existed for a national non-partisan voice to further the knowledge of pensions and benefits law within the legal profession to contribute to national policy, harmonization and legislative initiatives and to serve as a legal resource for the public. Click here to view the full proposal for the new National Pensions and Benefits Section.

The Purpose of this Section is:

  1. to review developing pensions and benefits legislation, standards and policy, and to promote the harmonization of same;
  2. to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on pensions and benefits matters among members of the legal profession, legislators, the judiciary, public policy organizations, employers, unions, retirees and other pension plan members, and the public;
  3. to serve as an educational resource and to organize lectures and seminars on pensions and benefits laws, standards and policy;
  4. to promote and undertake research on pensions and benefits law and related matters; and
  5. to advocate for pension standards reform.

The Section continues to focus on member development in order to increase provincial representation while establishing additional provincial branches.
