NATURAL RESOURCE AND ENERGY LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS: NORTH AND SOUTH OF 60

June 20 and 21, 2013,
The Explorer Hotel, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Due to the great demand for this year’s National Environmental, Energy and Resources Law Summit, the Explorer Hotel has limited availability with respect to hotel rooms. We have secured an additional block of rooms at the Days Inn, located at 4401 50 Ave (1-800-329-7466) and at the Yellowknife Inn, located at 5010 49 Street (1-867-873-2601). Please mention the Canadian Bar Association or the NEERLS conference to make a reservation.  As well, there are several accommodation options within a few short blocks of the Explorer.

Natural Resource and Energy Legal Developments: North and South of 60
Set against the backdrop of Canada’s arctic region, join us in an engaging program designed to provide private practitioners, in-house corporate and government counsel, regulators, and other professionals with an annual update on the hottest issues in the environmental, energy and resources law field.

Canada’s economy increasingly revolves around projects devoted to the extraction of its natural resources and the production of energy. As resource extraction projects gain attention, so too does the role of lawyers in the field. More and more, lawyers are advising clients and appearing before courts and tribunals on matters such as the environmental assessment of mining projects, the development of renewable energy generation projects, and the intersecting Aboriginal consultation process and accommodation issues.

This program will feature leading experts and practitioners discussing legal regimes and challenges associated with resource extraction projects such as mining and oil and gas extraction, spanning both north and south of 60. Substantive topics will address off-shore resource development, natural gas extraction, environmental assessment issues, renewable energy, streamlining regulatory processes, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility. Participants will gain a better understanding of how this burgeoning area is unfolding on the international, national, and local levels. This is a premier program with an added northern lens – not to be missed given the natural resource development opportunities north of 60.

Join us at the annual NEERLS section meeting:
Summit attendees are welcome to attend the NEERLS full-day business meeting on June 22. This is a terrific opportunity to get to know the NEERLS executive, to learn more about section activities, and to get involved!

International Environmental and Resources Law Committee Newsletter

The April 2013 issue of the International Environmental and Resources Law Committee Newsletter is now available.

One of NEERLS' goals this year has been to reach out to colleagues in other countries with a view to gaining a better appreciation of the issues confronting them in the areas of environmental, energy and resources law.  This first issue of the newsletter addresses subjects that are not only relevant but demonstrate that we have many of the same challenges in common and can draw on lessons learned in other places.
