Since first being elected National Chief in 1997, Phil Fontaine has been a leader in the advancement of First Nations issues, urging governments to ease Aboriginal poverty and to work harder to settle more than 1,100 outstanding land claims. National Chief Fontaine has been a unifying force among First Nations and has brought the message of Indigenous peoples to the international stage.
