His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson and Defence Minister Peter MacKay headlined this year’s conference.
The speakers’ line-up included Arianna Huffington, Larry Rosen, Simon Sinek, Arlene Dickinson and Kady O'Malley.

Trinda Ernst, Q.C. of Kentville, Nova Scotia received the chain of office from outgoing President Rod Snow at the closing luncheon. She brings to the presidency a threefold commitment: to encourage leadership in the profession, to promote volunteerism at the CBA and in the community, and to support advocacy on behalf of the profession.

Geoffrey Creighton, new CCCA Chair
Geoffrey Creighton of Toronto took over as Chair of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) from Robert Patzelt, Q.C. Mr. Creighton is senior vice-president, general counsel and secretary and chief compliance officer at IGM Financial Inc. “I am delighted to take up the position of chair in what is clearly a time of growth of the in-house counsel bar across the profession,” said Mr. Creighton.

Debate on solicitor-client privilege
The CBA Council meeting on August 14 featured a rapid-fire debate on solicitor-client privilege featuring Professor Adam Dodek, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa, Mahmud Jamal, of Osler LLP in Toronto, and moderated by Paul Paton, Chair of the CBA's Ethics and Professional Responsibility Committee.

The American Bar Association and the CBA earlier this month signed a historic agreement that will lead to enhanced cooperation and information exchanges between the two organizations, their in-house counsel constituencies, and the U.S. and Canadian legal professions.
A signing ceremony attended by the associations' presidents and witnessed by other bar leaders was held on Aug. 6 in Toronto at the opening of the ABA Annual Meeting.
