OTTAWA – Lindy Rouillard-Labbé of Montreal has been selected from among a field of 40 Canadian legal scholars as the 2012-2013 recipient of the $40,000 Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies.

Ms. Rouillard-Labbé, 29, holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations and international law, as well as a law degree, from the Université du Québec à Montréal. With the CBA Viscount Bennett Fellowship, she plans to pursue her master’s degree in law at Stanford University, specializing in compensation for victims of natural disasters.

“In recent decades, natural disasters have increased in severity and frequency. During my studies at Stanford, I will be in the ideal environment to conduct research into which compensation framework provides the most efficient, risk-spreading, and equitable solution for victims of natural catastrophes in Canada,” says Ms. Rouillard-Labbé.

Upon receiving her LL.B. in 2008, Ms. Rouillard-Labbé was awarded both the Montreal Bar Prize and the Governor General’s Academic Medal in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements. After clerking for the Honourable Mr. Justice Morris J. Fish of the Supreme Court of Canada, Ms. Rouillard-Labbé completed an internship in Cambodia, where she assisted United Nations and Cambodian co-prosecutors in preparing for the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders. She then joined Justice Canada, where she currently serves as civil litigation counsel.

The Fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former Prime Minister and CBA President Viscount Bennett. First awarded in 1946, the Fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian law student to encourage high standards of legal education, training, and ethics.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
