HALIFAX – Sherif Foda of Gatineau, Quebec, has been selected from among a field of 50 Canadian legal scholars as the 2011-2012 recipient of the $40,000 Canadian Bar Association Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies.
The 23-year-old student has excelled in the university environment, studying political science before turning his talents to law at the University of Ottawa. During his legal studies, Mr. Foda was actively involved in the student community as a Teaching Assistant, a Community Advisor for Residence Life and as an award-winning participant on the University of Ottawa team in moot court competitions in Canada and abroad. This year his team returned from the 18th annual moot in Vienna, Austria, as champions, triumphing over teams from almost 280 universities around the world.
In 2010, Sherif Foda won the Silver Medal in the LL.L. program at the University of Ottawa. In May, he completed his Juris Doctor at the university. With the Viscount Bennett Fellowship, he will pursue his M.Sc. in Law and Finance (M.Sc.L.F.) at the University of Oxford.
“This year of postgraduate studies in Oxford will complement my understanding gleaned during my studies of the world’s two largest legal systems. It provides a unique opportunity to explore new insights and perspectives of the economic and financial environment within which legal regulatory systems function,” says Mr. Foda.
The CBA Fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former Prime Minister and CBA President Viscount Bennett. The first Fellowship was awarded in 1946. The Fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian law student to encourage high standards of legal education, training, and ethics.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
