DUBLIN, IRELAND – Sarah-Ève Pelletier of St-Romuald, Quebec, has been selected from among a field of 37 Canadian legal scholars to be the 2009 recipient of the Canadian Bar Association Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies.
The 23-year-old Quebec City native received her LL.B from Laval University in 2008. Ms. Pelletier was selected to complete a semester in International Law at Montpellier University, France, at which time she also completed a diploma in Sports Law. Throughout her university career, Ms. Pelletier has balanced academics with sports, maintaining a rigorous training routine as a member of Canada’s national synchronized swimming team. Ms. Pelletier is currently a student lawyer with the law firm of Heenan Blaikie in Quebec City.
Beginning this fall, Ms. Pelletier will pursue a Masters degree in Entertainment, Media Law and Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with a focus on international sports organizations. Sarah-Ève was one of 60 students accepted to the program which had 1000 applicants.
“Legal issues such as labour, constitutional, gender equity and disability discrimination all exist in today’s complex world of sports,“ says Ms. Pelletier. “The sporting world requires a strong understanding of relations between the different states, international organizations and sports federations in order to effectively deal with these issues.”
In addition to her academic achievements, Ms. Pelletier has represented Canada in international synchronized swimming events, is a five-time Canadian individual champion, chairs one national sport committee, sits on another, has been a motivational speaker to children since 2004 and continues acting as an international choreographer in her sport.
The CBA Fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former Prime Minister and CBA President Viscount Bennett. The first Fellowship was awarded in 1946. Valued at $40,000, the Fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian student to encourage high standards of legal education, training and ethics.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to support for the rule of law, and improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
