FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 23, 2009

OTTAWA – Glenda Cole of Calgary has been named the 2009 winner of the Canadian Bar Association’s (CBA) Douglas Miller Award. The award was presented at the CBA Mid-Winter Meeting of Council in Lake Louise on Feb. 21 by CBA President Guy Joubert of Winnipeg.

Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Calgary, Glenda Cole has always been proactive in promoting civility and integrity among members of the legal profession.

“Ask this seasoned member to take on a job – and you know she will do it well,” says Guy Joubert of this year’s winner. “Whether it’s organizing a Mid-Winter Meeting in her home province, heading up the CBA National Sections Council, or undertaking a review of our national Annual Meetings, she takes on each and every job willingly, and with a smile.”

The CBA’s 2009 Mid-Winter Meeting of Council took place at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise from Feb. 20 to 22.

Glenda Cole received the award at the President’s Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 21. A member of the CBA since 1987, she’s chaired the National Municipal Law Section, and brought her knowledge of practice and practitioners’ needs to the CBA’s board of directors and finance committee as national Sections representative. Her good judgment, strong business acumen, and a first-hand knowledge of the CBA make her an enviable role model.

“In the true spirit of Doug Miller, our winner reflects the joy of unselfishly ‘giving back’ to the profession – a characteristic that she continues to admire and evoke among like-minded CBA members,” says Mr. Joubert.

The Douglas Miller Award honours the late Doug Miller of Yellowknife, a former president of the Association’s Northwest Territories Branch and a very active CBA member who passed away in 1994. The award recognizes a CBA member who demonstrates outstanding dedication and team spirit.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 38,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
