OTTAWA – Joseph Chedrawe has been selected from among a field of 25 Canadian legal scholars to be the 2008 recipient of the Canadian Bar Association Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies.

The 27 year-old Halifax native received his LL.B from Dalhousie Law School in 2005. After graduation, Mr. Chedrawe was law clerk to the Honourable Justice Danièle Tremblay-Lamer at the Federal Court of Canada. Called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2006, he is currently an associate with the law firm of Stewart McKelvey in Halifax.

Beginning this fall, he will pursue a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University in England. The focus of his studies will involve issues surrounding terrorism and counter-terrorism and the balance between human rights and national security.

“With the recent amendments to Canada’s immigration legislation, it will be very interesting to see how the new special advocate scheme develops in practice,” says Mr. Chedrawe. “For the past ten years, Courts and legislators in the United Kingdom have been closely examining similar national security issues. There is much to learn from the British experience.”

In addition to his academic achievements, Mr. Chedrawe has volunteered with numerous multicultural organizations, is fluent in English, French, Arabic and Spanish and has traveled throughout Europe, the Middle East and Australia. He also dedicates significant time to international Latin ballroom dance and looks forward to competing with the Oxford DanceSport team.

The CBA Fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former Prime Minister and CBA President Viscount Bennett. The first Fellowship was awarded in 1946. Valued at $40,000, the Fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian student to encourage high standards of legal education, training and ethics.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
