OTTAWA - Nicolas M. Rouleau has been selected from among a field of 29 Canadian legal scholars to be the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies.

The Toronto native is a 2005 University of Ottawa French Common Law Program graduate. This fall, he will pursue a master's of law degree in international legal studies at Stanford University in California. His research thesis will focus on foreign direct investment controls. Upon completion of the program, Rouleau hopes to begin the doctor of laws program, focusing his research on foreign direct investment controls.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2005, Rouleau is currently clerk to Supreme Court of Canada Justice Marie Deschamps. Rouleau has experience in international and constitutional law stemming from his volunteer work with the Uganda Human Rights Commission. Rouleau also has international development experience working with the Programme national de bonne gouvernance in Senegal, and volunteering with the International Federation of the Red Cross in Nigeria.

The CBA Fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former prime minister and CBA president Viscount Bennett. Valued at $40,000, the Fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian student to encourage high standards of legal education, training and ethics. The first Fellowship was awarded in 1946.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
