OTTAWA – George Hendy, Q.C., of Montreal has been named the 2007 winner of the Canadian Bar Association’s Douglas Miller Award. CBA President J. Parker MacCarthy, Q.C., of Duncan, B.C., presented the award at the CBA Mid-Winter Meeting of Council in Mont-Tremblant, Que., on Feb. 16.
“George reflects the joy of unselfishly giving back to his profession and the community,” said Parker MacCarthy in presenting the award. “He says it is this ‘give-back’ that is his inspiration.”
Mr. Hendy is a partner in the litigation department of Osler Hoskin Harcourt LLP’s Montreal office. With 33 years of experience before the courts, he specializes in corporate and commercial litigation, including pension fund litigation, unfair competition, product liability, and class actions. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a director of Bishop’s University Foundation.
Mr. Hendy has been an active CBA member for many years. He was President of the CBA’s Quebec Branch in 2000-2001. As well as serving on the Executive Committee of the Quebec Branch, he was also member of the CBA’s National Board of Directors. Currently, he is a Director of the CBA’s Law for the Future Fund and a member of the Executive of the CBA’s Legal Profession Assistance Conference.
The Douglas Miller Award honours the late Doug Miller of Yellowknife, a former president of the Association’s Northwest Territories Branch and a very active CBA member who passed away in 1994. The award recognizes a CBA member who demonstrates outstanding dedication and team spirit.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
