VANCOUVER – Arsen Krekovic of Vancouver, a recent graduate from law school at the University of British Columbia, has been selected as the winner of the 2005 Edward K. Rowan-Legg Memorial Award, which honours the contribution of a student member to the Canadian Bar Association (CBA).
“Mr. Krekovic's outstanding efforts in planning, organizing, and directing events for B.C.'s Law Week between 2003 and 2005 are a tribute to what a student can accomplish with a passion for the law,” said John Hoyles, CBA executive director and chair of the selection committee. “His unwavering commitment, enthusiasm, and innovation provide an excellent example to us all."
Mr. Krekovic joined the CBA in his first year of law school at the University of British Columbia in 2002, and in 2003 became a member of the Law Week Committee. He spearheaded the establishment of the Law Week Fun Run, including planning the course, obtaining all necessary permissions, arranging for equipment, and soliciting volunteers. The first race attracted 50 participants. By 2004, 75 people were participating, and the event posted a small surplus, that was used to help fund Law Week activities in local communities.
In 2005, Mr. Krekovic was also a driving force behind the development of four free public seminars during the 2005 Vancouver Open House, in conjunction with The People's Law School. The program was intended to increase the public's awareness of the law by presenting practical information about common legal situations, and consisted of classes in child and spouse support, wills and estates, custody, guardianship and access, and employment standards.
The jury was impressed with Mr. Krekovic's contribution as a representative of law students at UBC, and his invaluable commitment to and enthusiasm in promoting the benefits of the CBA.
Mr. Krekovic will begin a term as an articling student with Davis & Company in September.
The Award was established by Judi Rowan-Legg in honour of her husband, Edward K. Rowan-Legg of Ontario and Nova Scotia. Ted was a dedicated and active member of the CBA, who served as CBA National Treasurer from 1999 until his death in 2001.
The Award, a cash prize of $1,000, and a complimentary registration to the Canadian Legal Conference, recognizes a dedicated contribution to the CBA by a student member and encourages student member participation in the Canadian Legal Conference.
The award will be presented at the Young Lawyers Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 16 in the Vancouver Convention Centre, Hall C, during the Canadian Legal Conference in Vancouver, Aug. 14-16. The event is open to accredited media who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 34,000 lawyers, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
