WINNIPEG – Prasanna Ranganathan of Saskatoon has been selected as the winner of the 2003 Edward K. Rowan-Legg Memorial Award, which honours the contribution of a student member to the Canadian Bar Association (CBA).
“Mr. Ranganathan has gone above and beyond the call of duty in his efforts as a volunteer for the Canadian Bar Association,” said John Hoyles, CBA executive director and chair of the selection committee. “His commitment, enthusiasm and skill have had a positive impact on CBA student memberships and participation in the CBA Mentor Program at the University of Victoria Law School.”
Mr. Ranganathan joined the CBA in his first year of law school at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law in July 2002. The following year, he was elected vice-president (external) of the University of Victoria Law Students’ Society and the Canadian Bar Association Representative for the Faculty of Law.
During Mr. Ranganathan’s term as, he worked to promote the benefits of the CBA to the student body and increase student memberships. As a result, student CBA memberships more than doubled. The CBA Mentor Program, which matches members of the legal community with first-year law students, also more than doubled under his leadership.
The jury considered his contribution as a student representative and his commitment to and enthusiasm in promoting the benefits of the CBA.
The Award was established by Judi Rowan-Legg in honour of her husband, Edward K. Rowan-Legg of Ontario and Nova Scotia. Ted was a dedicated and active member of the CBA, who served as CBA National Treasurer from 1999 until his death in 2001.
The Award, a cash prize of $1,000, plus a complimentary registration to the Canadian Legal Conference, recognizes a dedicated contribution to the CBA by a student member and encourages student member participation in the Canadian Legal Conference.
The award will presented at the Young Lawyers Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 17 in the Winnipeg Convention Centre, VIP Salon, during the Canadian Legal Conference in Winnipeg, Aug. 15-17. The event is open to accredited media who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 38,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
