WINNIPEG – J. Guy Joubert of Winnipeg has been named the recipient of the Canadian Bar Association’s Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence for 2004.

“Guy Joubert is a tremendous asset to our Association,” said F. William Johnson, Q.C., of Regina, President of the Canadian Bar Association. “His qualities of leadership and dedication, plus his tireless contribution to the CBA on numerous committees, make him a role model for volunteerism.”

Guy Joubert has been a member of the CBA since 1984. He was part of the successful organizing committee of the CBA’s 1995 Annual Conference in Winnipeg. He served as president of the Manitoba Branch in 1996-1997. Mr. Joubert now chairs the CBA’s national Communications Committee and helped organize this year’s Canadian Legal Conference in Winnipeg.

During his term as President of the Manitoba Bar Association, Guy Joubert came to be known for taking stands on contentious issues, including the independence of the judiciary, even when his personal interests were at risk. During his term as Branch president, he was responsible for improving the provision of bilingual services in the Manitoba Branch of the CBA.

A partner with Aikins, MacAuley & Thorvaldson of Winnipeg, Mr. Joubert practices primarily in commercial and corporate law and intellectual property. He received his  LL.B. from the University of Manitoba in 1987 after obtaining his B.A. from the same university in 1983. He was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1988.

The Louis St-Laurent Award, which takes the form of a bronze statue of the former prime minister, recognizes distinguished or exceptional service to the goals of the Canadian Bar Association. The award is presented at the CBA Council Awards Luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre during the CBA’s 2004 Canadian Legal Conference and Trade Show, Aug. 14-17. The event is open to accredited journalists who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 38,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
