OTTAWA – United Nations Special Envoy Stephen Lewis will deliver the keynote address on the role of international human rights law at the opening plenary session of the CBA’s 2004 Canadian Legal Conference in Winnipeg on Aug. 15. 

Immediately following the plenary, panelists Janice Stein of the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto, and Sheema Khan, monthly columnist for the Globe and Mail and chair of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Canada, will explore human rights from an international, local and cultural perspective. The panel will be moderated by CBC’s Ann Medina.

A full roster of 28 educational programs follows on Aug. 16 and 17 under the theme Law Beyond Borders.  Programs topics include the business of climate change (the Kyoto Protocol); cross-border issues in privacy law; racial profiling; and solicitor-client privilege in the 21st century.  Another set of programs aimed at in-house counsel features sessions on mastering negotiation strategies; advising corporations on business conduct; and doing business online and worldwide. Invited guests include Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin and the federal Minister of Justice (dates and times TBC).  Speaking at the closing luncheon on Aug. 17 is futurist and technology broadcaster Tod Maffin, who will explain what’s driving the digital economy and how it’s changing the lives and practices of lawyers.  The Young Lawyers Pro Bono Award for outstanding service to the community will be presented Aug. 17.

The Justicia Award for outstanding media coverage of the law will be presented at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 14. Nominations for the award are being accepted until June 1, 2004. For information, please visit:
