FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 16, 2003
MONTREAL – Glenda Cole of Calgary has been named the 2003 recipient of the Canadian Bar Association’s Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence.
“Glenda Cole is a consummate volunteer, team player and leader,” says Simon Potter of Montréal, President of the Canadian Bar Association. “She has made outstanding contributions to the CBA through her leadership of national activities. Her energy and commitment have been unwavering.”
Ms. Cole has been a member of the CBA since 1985. After serving as Chair of the national Municipal Law Section, she was elected chair of the National Sections Council and served as Sections Representative on the board of directors and finance committee. She was the obvious choice to co-chair the Special Canadian Legal Conference Steering Committee which now oversees the development of CBA Annual meetings.
Ms. Cole is a leader within the CBA community who is not afraid to take on the most daunting tasks and deliver them with success. In 2002, she led a full-scale review of the CBA Annual Meeting. Her committee commissioned feedback from members across the country and delivered a report on a re-structured Canadian Legal Conference, changes approved by the CBA at the 2003 Mid-Winter meeting in Banff. Ms. Cole’s knowledge of the CBA combined with her commitment to the cause and leadership skills helped make this project a success.
Colleagues describe Ms. Cole as tenacious and say that she will attack any project, no matter how challenging, without expectation of reward. Over the years, she has worked tirelessly to promote the CBA, and serves as a role model for women in the Association.
A solicitor with the planning and land section at the City of Calgary, Ms. Cole is currently serving on secondment to the Office of the CEO with the city, helping to implement a variety of strategic planning initiatives. She received a Bachelor of Law from the University of Saskatchewan in 1987 and a Bachelor of Arts (with distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984. In 1988, she was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta.
The Louis St-Laurent Award, which takes the form of a bronze statue of the former Prime Minister, recognizes distinguished or exceptional service to the goals of the Canadian Bar Association. The award is presented at the CBA Council Awards Luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Palais des congrès during the CBA’s Canadian Legal Conference and Trade Show in Montréal, Aug. 16-19. The event is open to accredited journalists who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 38,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
