LONDON - The Canadian Bar Association has honoured Yvonne Peters, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, with the 2002 Bertha Wilson Touchstone Award.
"Ms. Peters is an outstanding example of a lawyer whose career and life have centered on the advancement of equity rights for women and the disabled, both as a litigator and as an educator," said Eric Rice, Q.C. CBA President.
Ms. Peters practices as a lawyer in Winnipeg, specializing in equality rights and human rights law. Her practice offers a blend of legal advice and social policy development.
In addition to her work as a lawyer, public speaker, educator, law reform consultant and board member, Yvonne Peters is a prolific volunteer. She has worked with numerous organizations, including the Canadian Disability Rights Council, Women's Health Clinic and the National Association of Women and the law.
She received a LL.B. from the University of Saskatchewan, a B.S.W. from the University of Regina, and a B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan. She was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1989.
Yvonne Peters continues to speak to the issues of equality and equity. She advances these issues through presentations to government staff, professional associations, regional health authorities, and other community organizations.
The Touchstone Award celebrates the accomplishments of an individual who has excelled in promoting equality in the legal profession, the judiciary, or the legal community in Canada. The award recognizes significant national initiative to advance equality and/or contribution relating to race, disability, sexual orientation or other diversity issues in the community.
The Standing Committee on Equality will present the award at the Touchstone Reception held as part of the Canadian Bar Association Annual Conference in London on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 4:30 p.m. at the Windsor Club, second floor, Hilton London. The event is open to accredited journalists who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
