FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 12, 2002

LONDON - Nora Sanders, of Iqaluit, Nunavut has been selected as this year's recipient of the John Tait Award of Excellence, presented by the Canadian Bar Association's Public Sector Lawyers Conference (PSLC).

"Ms. Sanders has spent most of her professional life giving to our country through her outstanding record of public service," says CBA President Eric Rice, Q.C., of Vancouver. "She has developed a reputation as a highly principled government representative meeting the highest standards of professional conduct and competence."

As a public servant, Ms. Sanders provided outstanding legal counsel to the Northwest Territories Department of Justice. She was also chair of the Board of Inquiry under the Police Services Act of Ontario. She also served as the Assistant Minister of Justice of the Northwest Territories. Ms. Sanders is currently the Deputy Minister of Justice for Nunavut.

In 1998 Ms. Sanders left the government of the Northwest Territories to become the first Deputy Minister of Justice of the newly formed territory of Nunavut. There she devoted her energy to the establishment of the government and its departments. Over the course of her career Ms. Sanders has demonstrated her commitment to the principles and to the practical applications of public law in a new and developing environment.

Ms. Sanders received her LL.B. in 1980 from Queen's University in Kingston and her B.A. from the University of Western Ontario in London.

The John Tait Award is presented by the PSLC during the Canadian Bar Association's Annual
Conference in London, on August 12 at 4:30 p.m., in the Armouries Ballroom A of the Delta Armouries Hotel. The event is open to accredited journalists who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.

The award was established in 1998 to honour, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Public Sector Lawyers in Canada. Originally named the Inukshuk Award of Excellence, it was renamed in August 1999 to honour John Tait, an outstanding lawyer, public servant and friend of the CBA who passed away in the summer of 1999.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
