FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 9, 2002

LONDON - Mark Peacock of Montreal, has been named the 2002 recipient of the Canadian Bar Association's Louis St-Laurent Award of Excellence.

"Mark Peacock personifies the very essence and spirit of what the CBA and its members represent," says Eric Rice, Q.C., President of the Canadian Bar Association. "He has made outstanding contributions to the CBA through his work and involvement in branch and national activities. His energy and commitment have been unwavering."

Mr. Peacock has been a member of the CBA since 1980 and served as President of the Quebec Branch of the CBA for the 1996-1997 term. He is also currently a Director and Management Board Member of the Canadian Bar Insurance Association.

Among Mr. Peacock's notable accomplishments is the launch of the highly successful and innovative legal education program used to teach citizenship to secondary students in Quebec. This program is a joint initiative of the Quebec Branch and the Canadian Judges Forum and was prepared in collaboration with leading educators. It is the first of its kind in Quebec and is designed to ensure that Canadian youth understand and respect the rule of law and the Canadian and Quebec Charters. Through their hands-on participation in a court proceeding, students learn first hand the important role played by lawyers and judges in our Canadian democracy.

The jury said Mr. Peacock had engendered the tremendous respect of lawyers, judges and politicians across the county. He has worked tirelessly to promote the two official languages within the CBA, both at the national and branch level. Mr. Peacock remains a valued ambassador to the CBA.

Mr. Peacock has his own firm where his practice focuses on complex administrative, civil and commercial litigation and education law. He received a Bachelor of Law (Common) from Queen's University in 1974 and a Bachelor of Law (Civil) from the Université Laval in 1979. He received his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, England in 1975.

The Louis St-Laurent Award, which takes the form of a bronze statue of the former Prime Minister, recognizes distinguished or exceptional service to the goals of the Canadian Bar Association. The award will be presented at the CBA Council Luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the London Convention Centre, Salon C/D/E (Main Floor) during the CBA's Annual Conference in London, Aug. 10-14. The event is open to accredited journalists who have registered with the CBA Media Centre.

The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
