FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 20, 2002
OTTAWA — Judge Nancy Orr of the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court in Charlottetown is the 2002 recipient of the Canadian Bar Association's Douglas Miller Award. The President of the CBA, Eric Rice, Q.C., presented the award honouring Judge Orr at the CBA's 2002 Annual Mid- Winter Meeting in Moncton, New Brunswick.
"Judge Orr's dedication and enthusiasm for the association and its members, the inspiration behind this award, are a credit to the CBA and its members, both lawyers and judges alike," said Mr. Rice.
Judge Orr, who has been a member of the CBA's National Council for more than 20 years, has served the association in a wide variety of roles. She was a co-founder of the Canadian Judges' Forum, a special conference of the CBA devoted to issues of concern to judges and the judicial system, serving as Co-Chair from 1999-2001.
Judge Orr has also served extensively on the association's Legal Aid Liaison Committee and its Gender Equity Task Force. She is a long-standing and active member of the CBA's Prince Edward Island Branch Executive, including serving as President in 1987-88. She received the Branch's Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
Judge Orr is also very active in her community, particularly in the promotion of junior hockey. She is heavily involved with the Canadian Hockey Association and Junior A Hockey Leagues throughout the Maritime provinces, and has filled roles in various leagues all the way up to league vice-president and commissioner.
The Douglas Miller Award honours the late Doug Miller of Yellowknife, a former President of the association's Northwest Territories Branch and a very active CBA member who passed away in 1994.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
