FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 9, 2000
OTTAWA - Canadian Bar Association President Eugene Meehan, Q.C., announces that Julie Godkin a graduate of Dalhousie Law School, has won the CBA s Viscount Bennett Fellowship for graduate legal studies for the 2000-2001 academic term.
Ms. Godkin of Goderich, Ontario, was selected from a field of 27 legal scholars across Canada. She will pursue her BCL at Brasenose College, Oxford, in corporate governance and cross-border transactions. "We live in an era where borders have less meaning in the commercial world," says Julie Godkin.
"In the past few years especially, the U.S., Canada and Great Britain have been very reliant on each other for intervention in their securities regulation, the law governing shareholder rights and the roles of directors and senior management in cross-border transactions," she adds.
At the undergraduate level, Julie Godkin completed the Bachelor of Arts Honours with a major in History at Queen s University. She also had the opportunity to study British political and cultural history in East Sussex, England for part of a year. This experience sparked her interest in comparative business law.
Beyond her academic success, Julie Godkin has served editorial roles for both the Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies and the Dalhousie Law Journal. She also enjoys squash, swimming and was once an active competitive rower. She is looking forward to returning to rowing in Oxford.
The fellowship was established under the terms of a trust by former Prime Minister and CBA president Viscount Bennett. The first fellowship was awarded in 1946. Since then, some 65 students have been awarded the fellowships. Valued at $20,000, the fellowship is awarded annually to a Canadian student to encourage high standards of legal education, training and ethics.
The Canadian Bar Association is dedicated to improvement in the law and the administration of justice. Some 37,000 lawyers, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada are members.
