CBA Hosts Joint Conference With Inter-American Bar Association

OTTAWA - Doing Business in the Americas in the Next Millennium: Opportunities for Growth is the subject of a joint Canadian Bar Association and Inter-American Bar Association conference Oct. 14-17, 1999, at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa.

Some 125 registrants from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, the US, and Canada are gathering in Ottawa for four days. "This is the first time the joint meeting is being held in Canada," says Eugene Meehan, of Ottawa, President of the Canadian Bar Association. "The conference offers lawyers from Canada, the US, and from Central and South American a unique opportunity to discuss relevant trade and international issues relevant to the practice of law."
Three continuing legal education programs focus on the impact of free trade, doing business in Latin American, and capital markets.
The first program entitled Free Trade takes place on Friday, Oct. 15, 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Led by Jon R. Johnson, Goodman, Phillips & Vineberg (Toronto), panellists include Gordon Ritchie, Ambassador for trade negotiations on the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement; Raul Etcheverry, Prof. of Commercial Law, University of Buenos Ares Law School; Lucinda Low, of Miller and Chevalier (Washington, DC), Chair of the American Bar Association's International Law and Practice Section.
Doing Business in Latin America takes place on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, and is moderated by Salvadore Juncadella, International Consultant, of Morgan Lewis and Bockius. Panellists include Jimmy Morales, of Morgan Lewis and Bockius (Miami); Tony Santos, of Greenberg Traurig (Miami); Claudio Morfe, Vice President and General Counsel, Caribbean and Latin America, Nortel Networks (Toronto); Ian Arellano, of McCarthy Tétrault (Toronto); and Victoria Selby-Cane, Royal Bank of Canada (Bahamas).
The third seminar, Capital Markets, on Saturday, Oct. 16, 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, features Douglas Robertson, of Goodman, Phillips & Vineberg (Montreal); and Kenneth Schwartz, of Grant, Herrmann, Schwartz & Klinger (New York).
Seminars take place in the Drawing Room, Chateau Laurier Hotel, and are sponsored by The Royal Bank of Canada, Nortel Networks and Power Corp. All sessions are open to media.
