Law Day 2008 in the Capital

CBA President Bernard Amyot joined Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson on April 17 for Law Day in Ottawa. Some 650 high school law students attended the event that included a mock trial, career panel, and special presentations by the President and the Minister. After meeting privately with Minister Nicholson, the CBA President visited the Senate where a Law Day statement was read by Senator Hugh Segal.

About Law Day

Law Day is a time for the public to learn about the law, the legal profession and some of the legal institutions that form the cornerstones of our Canadian democracy.

Organized by the Canadian Bar Association, this year’s Law Day theme is Access to Justice. The CBA – through Law Day – offers the public an opportunity to learn about the law and the legal system. Law Day activities in most areas focus on high school students.

Law Day – Law Week in many jurisdictions - is marked by projects and activities taking place across the country. Activities include lectures on the law, mock trials, courthouse tours, fun runs, open citizenship courts, and poster, photography and website design contests aimed at elementary and high school students.

Law Day is made possible through the efforts of hundreds of lawyers who donate thousands of hours of volunteer time to the event. Timing of Law Day events varies across the country.
