Grant Application Information

Purpose
Established as a registered charity in 1984, the Law for the Future Fund provides financial support for legal research conducted under the auspices of the Canadian Bar Foundation. The Fund was established by donations from individual lawyers, law firms, legal organizations and foundations, as well as corporations.

The Fund has supported many worthwhile initiatives since it was established in 1984. Examples include systems of justice, racial equality, court reform, law and ethics in health care, gender equality and conflict of interest.

Scope
The Law for the Future Fund sponsors projects that are of national interest and/or are of benefit to the general public. Projects must be in one of the following fields:

  • Legal research
  • Legal education
  • Legislation and law reform
  • Administration of justice
Only Canadian projects will be considered.

Criteria
Applications are assessed according to the following criteria:
  • Innovativeness of the project
  • Anticipated impact

Application
Applications must contain all the following information:
  1. Title of project
  2. Name of institution 
  3. Federal charitable registration number (mandatory)
  4. Address, telephone number and fax number
  5. Contact person (project leader)
  6. Proposal must include:
    1. Executive summary
    2. Definition of the problem
    3. Rationale for proposed project
    4. Methodology
    5. Anticipated impact and target group
    6. Timetable
    7. Preliminary itemized budget for project
    8. Method of evaluation

  7. Key personnel
  8. Other sources of funding applied for and results
The following documents must accompany the application:
  1. Organization's budget for the current and preceding year
  2. Audited financial statement for organization
  3. Brief history of organization and its purposes
  4. List of Board of Directors of organizations


Exclusions
No support can be given for capital projects, ongoing operating expenses, budget deficits, general fund drives, annual charitable appeals, scholarships, sabbaticals, the holding of conferences or seminars. Requests relating exclusively to publication costs, equipment purchases and travel costs cannot be considered. No permanent commitments are made to support any type of project. Individuals applying for grants must do so under the auspices of organizations which are qualified donees under the Income Tax Act. No grants are made to projects which would result in financial gain to an individual or organization.

Additional Conditions 
The Law For The Future Fund and its related organizations have all the rights and privileges to use the results of all research funded.
Expenses pertaining to projects will be reimbursed as costs occur within the specific budget approved.
Each project must be on an annual basis.
