Managing Editor

Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief of National, the Managing Editor provides key editorial support and writing services for National magazine and CCCA Magazine, as well as for other CBA communications vehicles. Working within the publication policies and editorial standards set by the CBA, the Managing Editor will be responsible for helping choose, assign and edit magazine articles, contributing articles for both publications on an as-needed basis, and assisting the Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editor in charting the editorial course of these and other CBA publications.

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Provides key editorial support for National magazine and CCCA Magazine, including choosing, assigning and editing feature articles and columns, as well as proofreading and copy-to-copy editing as required.
  • Provides magazine writing services as required, primarily through feature articles or PracticeLInk Upfront items.
  • Provides writing and editing services for other CBA publications from time to time, including Addendum e-newsletters, the CBA PracticeLInk website, and various CBA handbooks and online news services.
  • Provides other Communications Department services as required, including but not limited to speechwriting, press releases, and scriptwriting for the Canadian Legal Conference.
  • Provides editorial backup in the absence of National magazine’s Editor-in-Chief or Senior Editor.
  • Implements CBA bilingualism, Internet and publications policy
  • Liaises with staff and volunteer editors

  • Freelance magazine writers

  • Rogers Media Advertising representatives

  • Other magazine contributors

LIAISON DUTIES

Works with magazine editorial staffers in a collaborative, team-first approach to producing publications. Liaises with non-CBA personnel in furtherance of production, design and printing of CBA publications. Liaises with other CBA staff as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

a) Minimum Education

  • Post-secondary education essential
  • Journalism degree a strong asset
  • Law degree a strong asset

b) Minimum Related Professional Experience

  • Two or more years’ experience as editor of magazine, newspaper or related publication in the business, professional, or trade publishing industry.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with online research and Internet news-gathering techniques (e.g., blogs, RSS)
  • Writing and editing experience in the corporate and legal fields a strong asset
  • Excellent command of the English language;
  • Functional knowledge of French;
  • Excellent editing and writing skills
  • Top-notch organizational skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience working with volunteers is an asset;
  • Proven self-starter and team player, dedicated to excellence; and
  • Ability to work under pressure in any job-related situation efficiently and effectively.
