International Development Committee
The International Development Committee (IDC) is a Standing Committee of the CBA. The IDC "anchors" the CBA's international program to the broader governance structure of the CBA. It essentially provides a board function to the work of the IDC staff providing broad policy support and direction for the international program. It is made up of nine CBA member volunteers and includes academics, judges and lawyers. The Committee meets at least twice a year. Committee members are selected based on their international experience, their interest and knowledge of development issues and their ability to bring particular expertise and knowledge to the program.
IDC Members
To ensure the continuity of the IDC initiatives, the members of the IDC are appointed for three two-year terms on a rotating annual basis by the Nominating Committee of the CBA. The members of the Committee are selected based on their interest, ability and capacity to contribute to the work of the Committee.
The IDC Members for 2011/2012 are as follows:
- Thomas C. Marshall, Q.C., Chair
- Alan Treleaven
- Pierre Fournier
- Anne M. Wallace, Q.C.
- Suzanne Labbé
- The Honourable Robert Beaudoin
- Elizabeth Campbell
- William L. Ryan, Q.C.
- Sheila Osborne-Brown
Staff And Management Structure
The IDC staff are directly responsible to the CBA for the management of international projects, that is, for all the management aspects relating to the selection, design and implementation of projects including the selection and collaboration with outside institutions; the selection, allocation and management of staff resources; the management of finances; and the accountability to and liaison with funders, including the contractual reporting requirements.
There are currently 8 full and part time staff working on international projects for the IDC. All have extensive project and institutional management, as well as international, experience. While each staff member has a particular management responsibility, the general approach within the IDC is a team approach, which incorporates participatory mechanisms. In this way the IDC is able to effectively leverage the expertise of its individual staff members to benefit all of its programs.
