Aboriginal Awareness Symposium

On March 9, 51 bar leaders met at the UBC First Nations Longhouse Great Hall (Sty-Wet-Tan) to discuss aboriginal issues as they relate to the justice system.

Speakers included:

Dr Jo-Ann Archibald, Director, First Nations House of Learning

Chief Robert Joseph, Director, BC Residential Schools Project

June McCue, Director, First Nations Legal Studies

In focusing on direct experience of aboriginal culture and history, participants were entertained by flutist Gene Gallant, the Wally Awassis Dance Group and Wendy Lynn Gaspard, and dined courtesy of the Liliget Feast House and Catering. The event was developed through the cooperative efforts of the CBABC’s Equality Committee and the UBC First Nations House of Learning, and was co-funded by the CBABC and the Legal Services Society. CBABC President Margaret Ostrowski, QC commended the organizers, speakers, entertainers and participants for their commitment to pursuing greater understanding between First Nations people and bar leaders in the justice system.
