Chief Justice McEachern honoured for leadership

On Wednesday, April 11, 2001, past and present participants and group leaders gathered at the Law Courts Inn to recognize the long-serving champion of the Inns of Court Program, Chief Justice Allan McEachern. The Chief Justice was honoured for his leadership of and dedication to a program which has provided opportunities for more than 800 young lawyers to meet senior practitioners and judges to discuss a variety of topics related to professionalism. Based on a long-standing English tradition, the Inns of Court program has survived and thrived in a time when there appear to be fewer mentorship initiatives and opportunities encouraging dialogue between younger and more experienced lawyers and judges.

Speakers included former Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court David Campbell, Mr Justice Bruce Cohen, Karen Nordlinger, QC a past president of the Law Society, and recent program participant Matthew Nathanson. Mary Ainslie and Daniel Shugarman, both former program participants, emceed the event. The culmination of the evening was Vancouver Bar Association President Ursula Botz’s presentation of a framed portrait of the Chief Justice, which will be mounted permanently in a place of honour in the Law Courts Inn.
