The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is the leader and voice of Canada’s legal profession in a complex, changing world. The CBA is the determined advocate of the profession and champion of the rule of law, across Canada and around the world; enables members to prosper by connecting with peers and optimizing their potential – personally and professionally; and enhances the competitiveness of law firms, corporations and other organizations with relevant knowledge and innovative resources.

The CBA is a professional, voluntary, not-for-profit organization which was formed in 1896, and incorporated by a Special Act of Parliament on April 15, 1921. Today, the Association represents 38,000 lawyers, judges, Quebec notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada, of which more than 6,700 are members of the BC Branch. The purpose of the Association is to:

• enhance the professional and commercial interests of our members and protect the independence of the judiciary and the bar
• provide personal and professional development and support to all members
• promote fair justice systems and facilitate effective law reform
• promote equality in the legal profession and eliminate discrimination

Our Goal
The goal of the BC Branch of the CBA (CBABC) is to be the primary resource and voice for its members in all issues affecting its members.

The delivery of value to all members and the recognition of that value by the membership is paramount.

Priorities
The eight equal priorities of the CBABC are:

• To promote the interests of lawyers and other members;
• To support members’ professional education;
• To be the voice of the profession;
• To provide member services;
• To promote inclusiveness and diversity in the law schools, the Branch and the profession;
• To enhance communications with the membership;
• To promote and enhance the image of lawyers; and
• To promote the public interest.
