VANCOUVER–Law Week is an annual celebration commemorating the anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In celebration of Law Week, various BC communities will host open houses at local courthouses. The Canadian Bar Association will also hold the popular toll free “Dial-A-Lawyer” program, a student mentor program, and writing, speaking and photo contests for youth.
Members of the public are invited to participate in two free public events on Saturday, April 17:
1. Free Telephone Consultations with Lawyers: 11:00 am - 3:00 pm Call the Dial-A-Lawyer number to speak with a lawyer about a legal problem for up to 15 minutes for free. Lawyers specializing in different areas of law (family, criminal, wills, etc.) will be available during this time to answer calls at the following numbers: 604.687.3221 in the Lower Mainland, and 1.800.663.1919. Mandarin speaking callers can call 604.687.3404 and toll free 1.888.687.3404.
2. Public Open House, Vancouver Law Courts, 800 Smithe Street: 10:00 - 2:00 pm Members of the public are invited to attend an open house at the courthouse to learn about the justice system. There will be guest speakers (including the Attorney General and Chief Judges), a mock trial, a citizenship ceremony, displays by partners in the justice system, and public speaking competitions by students from throughout BC.
