Respected Judge Receives Top Honour From CBA BC Branch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DECEMBER 2, 2003

VANCOUVER–Madam Justice Lynn Smith received the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch’s highest honour at the annual Bench & Bar Dinner on November 20, 2003. The Georges A Goyer QC Memorial Award was presented at the dinner, held at the Law Courts in Vancouver.

“As a lawyer, as an academic and as a judge, Madam Justice Smith has made an exceptional contribution to the development of the law in British Columbia,” said Robert Brun, President, Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch.

Madam Justice Smith is currently a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was recognized for being an inspirational role model throughout her career, from her days as a young practising lawyer taking important precedent-setting constitutional cases to the Supreme Court of Canada, as a former Dean at UBC, and in her present role as a thoughtful, careful judge in our courts.

The Goyer Award was created in 1992 to recognize exceptional contributions to the legal profession, to jurisprudence or to the law in British Columbia. The award was established in memory of Georges A Goyer QC, a respected member of the BC Branch who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
