Judge Turpel-Lafond was appointed in November 2006, to a five-year term as BC’s first Representative for Children and Youth, an independent statutory officer of the BC Legislature. Of Cree heritage, she acquired a LL.B (Osgoode Hall), a LL.M (Cambridge), a Doctorate of Law SJD (Harvard), and a Certificate in international and comparative law of human rights. As a practicing lawyer, a tenured law professor, and an author, Judge Turpel-Lafond has won many awards, including honourary doctorates. She was appointed a Provincial Court Judge in Saskatoon in 1998 and is currently on leave from that position. Time Magazine chose her as one of the “100 Global Leaders of Tomorrow” in 1994, and again in 1999 as one of the “Top 20 Canadian Leaders of the 21st Century.”
